We provide free, independent legal assistance to asylum seekers on Lesvos

There are currently over 7,000 asylum seekers on the Greek island of Lesvos, the vast majority of whom have fled Syria, Afghanistan or Iraq. They have come to Lesvos in search of safety and protection from war and persecution.

Almost all of them live in Moria Camp, where the conditions are notorious – it has recently been called the “the worst refugee camp on Earth” by the BBC.

Over 5,000 asylum seekers reside in Moria (which has a capacity of only 3,100), more than half of whom are women or children, including over 400 unaccompanied minors.

European Lawyers in Lesvos (“ELIL”) is an independent charity. Our team of Greek asylum lawyers and volunteer European asylum lawyers provide free, independent legal assistance to asylum seekers in Moria.

We believe in the fundamental importance of upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights and ensuring meaningful access to legal assistance. We believe that every asylum seeker should be able to receive free legal assistance, from an independent lawyer experienced in asylum law, before their asylum interview.

Through our work, we help people know their rights, understand the slow and complex asylum process and significantly improve their chances of receiving safety and protection. We also help reunite families and help people leave Moria as soon as possible.
