CCBE Logo

The Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (“CCBE”) is an organisation which represents the bars and law societies of 45 countries, and through them more than one million European lawyers. It is recognised as the voice of the European legal profession by the national bars and law societies on the one hand, and by the EU institutions on the other. It acts as the liaison between the EU and Europe’s national bars and law societies.

DAV Logo

The German Bar Association is the independent organisation of German lawyers. Based on voluntary membership, the German Bar Association (Deutscher Anwaltverein, “DAV”) represents German lawyers and notary lawyers in all economic, public and professional interests as well as policy questions related to the rule of law. The DAV observes political and confessional neutrality and places great emphasis on respect for human rights and the rule of law. Furthermore, it promotes gender equality. Together with the German Federal Bar (Bundesrechtsanwaltskammer, “BRAK”), the DAV represents the German legal profession in the CCBE.

CNB logo

The French Bar Association (Conseil national des barreaux, CNB), a public interest body as well as a legal entity, is the national institution that represents all practicing lawyers in France, with all lawyers also being registered in one of 161 local bars. The CNB was given some very specific responsibilities by law, and the way it works is governed by legal provisions and decrees, backed by internal rules. Its most extensive field of activity is representing the legal profession in France and abroad. The CNB joined ELIL as a shareholder in 2019.

Law firms and Foundations

In 2019, ELIL formed new partnerships with:

Defence for Children International, Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), The Fred Foundation, Fondation Abbé Pierre, Stichting Vluchteling

The same year, ELIL began a new collaboration with six major international law firms: White & Case, Allen & Overy, Ashurst, Orrick, Dentons and Charles Russell Speechlys – together the “Greece Pro Bono Collaborative”. Three lawyers from these firms (cumulatively) volunteer with ELIL at all times.

European Lawyers in Lesvos would also not be possible without the generous support of Oxfam, the Sebastian Cobler Foundation and Matrix Chambers.

We are extremely grateful for all the support received, which has enabled European Lawyers in Lesvos to continue its work to uphold the rule of law and protect human rights on Lesvos.

In 2020, ELIL formed new partnerships with Comic Relief and SolidariTee to support the new ELIL Samos Project.
